As a writer and photographer I travel between my life in Toronto, my life in Antigua, and anywhere else my wanderings may take me ... writing my books and enjoying local arts and adventures along the way.

Long Bay Beach

The Long Bay Hotel beach bar was luxuriously elegant.

The sign we passed as we entered Long Bay beach read “the best beach in Antigua”. It was a nice beach, but Antigua has so many beautiful beaches that saying any one is the best is a tall order. It definitely did have the nicest beach bar though.

Stingray City at Seaton’s Village

The parrots spoke so convincingly that the kids thought they understood human speech rather than just repeating it.

Stingray city has a number of other curiosities besides the opportunity to swim with the rays. We got there after it closed so we weren’t able to swim with them, but because of these other curiosities we were still entertained. One of these was the cages of various species of parrots. They were all trained to say “hello” with the affectionate voice of a woman. They didn’t say it all together in a chorus, but said it one at a time, each with a slightly different intonation, as if to compete for our attention with the promise of a unique conversation. The effect was so startlingly human that the children were surprised when the parrots didn’t proceed past hello to ask them how they were enjoying their stay in Antigua.

Skinks, Anoles and Butterflies

In any case, since the internet was working, today became a day of catching up on various online tasks. For my kids it became a day of running around in the yard trying to catch some of Antigua’s fauna for closer observation

Turtles in Antigua

During our stay in Antigua some sea turtles are expected to come to shore to lay eggs. My kids love the idea of watching them so that will definitely be part of our agenda.
